The $8 million Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre has created a new architectural icon for north-east Victoria with its monumental design and striking use of Stramit® Premium Products.

The new building includes a 530-seat theatre, function and conference spaces, main entry foyer, dressing rooms, multi-purpose green room and office areas, as well as a café, commercial kitchen and theatre bar.

Harmer Architects’ guiding philosophy was to choose construction materials that were buildable, long lasting, economical, hard wearing, easy to maintain, suited the acoustic demands and also expressed the new building as a place for entertainment.

Stramit Monoclad® wall cladding in COLORBOND® Metallic finish (Conservatory) and stainless steel Longspan® cladding were used to create steel “planks” that form the feature cladding, creating a unique architectural statement and making the building more exciting and festive.  The cladding surfaces were animated by combining the Metallic finish with linished stainless steel interspersed with perforated steel and mirror polish panels to reflect light and attract attention.

Metallic Monoclad® cladding was also applied to areas such as escape stairs and plant room beside the main entrance, as well as the theatre entry stairs in the foyer, providing a unique and maintenance-free finish.

Perforated black Stramit Longspan® cladding with insulation blanket was used as an economical acoustic solution in the function room ceiling and on the rear wall of the theatre auditorium.

Constructed by Hansen Yuncken, with Stramit® cladding installed by Meredith Roof Plumbing Services, the new performing arts centre opened in September 2009 in time to host Wangaratta’s 50th birthday celebrations and the 20th annual Wangaratta Jazz Festival, the city’s major drawcard.
